I wanted to give people more of a background on how you can have a sustainable business in this industry. I also used to do panels around the world, talking about how I got started. Before I became a parent, I’d try to hop on a call with people who wanted advice. My ability to mentor younger folks is more limited now. Today, COVID has changed things, we don’t have interns in the office. Ultimately, though, I did not have anyone to show me the ropes when I got started. Marc: So, they thought you were too good? Different people I knew in the industry would give me some of their contacts. I was an intern, working for free, but I guess they thought I was going to demand a job. After 4 hours, I was told that I was being let go because they thought I wanted a job there. To learn from someone who had been in the business for longer than I had. I decided to take an internship to gain more knowledge. What you are talking about happened when I was 21. I didn’t intern at an agency and work my way up. Michelle Cable: Yes, a lot of people ask me if I had a mentor when I started. Marc Brown: Michelle, you told me the story of when you went to work somewhere to try and learn about the business of booking bands. The following transcript has been edited for length and clarity. What does the future hold? After putting everything on hold for 24 months, “live” has never been more important. In a pre-COVID world, touring was becoming key to monetising a music career. Michelle has had an incredible journey from a 14-year-old Fanzine founder & publisher to a key player in touring and management. Live music is quickly returning as artists scramble to get back out on the road. This episode’s guest was Michelle Cable, founder of Panache Booking and Panache Management.
